UPDATE: Milo Yiannopolous has now resigned from Breitbart, making his fall from peak celebrity status even more spectacular and complete.
The Alt-Right movement's performing internet troll Milo Yiannopolous has had his CPAC speech pulled and book deal with Simon and Schuster terminated after comments surfaced of him condoning pedophilia.
The controversial comments were made on a podcast named the "Drunken Peasants" at an unknown time, and were deemed so serious that many of his own supporters have turned against him.
“This is a controversial point of view, I accept," Yiannopoulos said in the podcast before launching into a full throttle defense of outright pedophilia.
"We get hung up on this sort of child abuse stuff to the point where we are heavily policing consensual adults,” he continued.
“In the homosexual world, particularly, some of those relationships between younger boys and older men — the sort of ‘coming of age’ relationship — those relationships in which those older men help those young boys discover who they are and give them security and safety and provide them with love and a reliable, sort of rock, where they can’t speak to their parents.”
“It sounds like molestation to me,” an unnamed interviewer says in response. “It sounds like Catholic priest molestation to me.”
“But you know what? I’m grateful for Father Michael," shot back Yiannopolous. "I wouldn’t give nearly such good head if it wasn’t for him.”
Yiannopolous has spoken about his relationship with the unknown Father Michael in another interview with Joe Rogan -- an adult man (and apparent priest) he apparently had a relationship with at the age of 14:
It is often difficult to parse how serious Yiannopolous is being given his penchant for trolling liberals and promoting his personal brand, but the sentiment is deeply, deeply disturbing. Later in the "Drunken Peasants" podcast, Yiannopolous explains his position in more depth:
“You’re misunderstanding what pedophilia means," he responded to the interviewer's question about it being sexual abuse. "Pedophilia is not a sexual attraction to somebody 13-years-old who is sexually mature. Pedophilia is attraction to children who have not reached puberty. Pedophilia is attraction to people who don’t have functioning sex organs yet. Who have not gone through puberty. Who are too young to be able (unclear and cut off by others)…That’s not what we are talking about. You don’t understand what pedophilia is if you are saying I’m defending it because I’m certainly not,” he continued.
"I think particularly in the gay world and outside the Catholic church, if that’s where some of you want to go with this, I think in the gay world, some of the most important, enriching and incredibly life affirming, important shaping relationships very often between younger boys and older men, they can be hugely positive experiences for those young boys they can even save those young boys, from desolation, from suicide … providing they’re consensual.”
This argument is completely ridiculous and flies in the face of pretty much everything psychologists and child abuse investigators know about relationships between adults and children. Sexual maturity and emotional maturity are absolutely not interdependent, and while some humans mature sexually at a younger age, they are still emotionally completely unequipped to be in a relationship with an adult. This is why almost all cultures forbid relationships between matured adults and children, no matter how "sexually mature" they appear to be. Relationships between men and young children are invariably the result of "grooming", a term the National Sex Offenders Public Website defines as, "Subtle approaches designed to build relationships with families." The NSOPW continues:
"The offender may assume a caring role, befriend the child, or even exploit their position of trust and authority to groom the child and/or the child’s family. These individuals intentionally build relationships with the adults around a child or seek out a child who may have fewer adults in her/his life. This increases the likelihood that the offender’s time with the child is welcomed and encouraged."
This is almost exactly the scenario Yiannopolous describes and explicitly condones. Consensual or not, a child is incapable of making an informed decision when entering into a sexual relationship with an adult. The Daily Banter reached out to Patrick Perion, a seasoned child abuse investigator who had the following to say about the subject:
"A child as young as 13 or 14 can be very easily manipulated into sexual activity with an older adult. In every single case I've investigated of teacher student sex abuse, the teacher has groomed the child over some period of time, plying them with attention and gifts. People who target young teens also seek out those who are more vulnerable with bad home lives. Think of the Sandusky victims, who were poor kids from bad homes. Often times after the sexual abuse starts, the child may even initiate the sexual contact."
"Gay children that Milo was referring to are particularly susceptible to grooming and eventually giving into a sexual relationship. They are already feeling like an outcast, most likely can't talk to their parents and may have already been teased or bullied for being gay."
"This is why Milo's splitting hairs on the definition of Pedophilia is inherently wrong. The children who are victims are not making informed consensual decisions, they are manipulated into the 'relationship' and even if they think they are an equal partner, they are never in control, the adult is."
Yiannopolous has openly discussed his own sexual dysfunction and identity issues -- no doubt in part a consequence of his evidently abusive childhood -- although he would disagree with this characterization. He has successfully parlayed this into an entertaining public persona where he trades on his sexual orientation, using it to provoke opponents with outrageous statements ("lesbians, if you want to be happy, suck a dick"!). Yiannopolous believes he is immune from repercussion due to his own minority status, and gleefully attacks feminists, transgendered people, African Americans and Muslims while fluttering his eyelids and making dick jokes.
Defending pedophilia however, appears to be a step too far, and Yiannopolous's camp deflection strategy is proving inadequate in preventing a very serious backlash that could well end his career. On top of being booted from CPAC and having his book deal terminated, Fox News also reported that Yiannopolous could also be fired from Breitbart.com, the Alt-Right hate site he is an editor at. Yiannopolous posted a lengthy defense of his comments on his facebook page, but with former friends and co-workers rapidly distancing themselves from him, it is hard to see how he charms his way out of this one.
Yiannopolous carved out a career for himself by pandering to the extreme right -- an element of society not known for its open mindedness on issues of human sexuality. They tolerated his homosexuality due to his virulent misogyny, transphobia and thinly veiled racism, but it seems advocating child abuse is too much even for them. Yiannopolous's mischievousness and insatiable love of the limelight propelled him to great heights in the era of Trump. But just as the ancient Greeks warned, if you fly too close to the sun, your wings will get burned. And Milo Yiannopolous's are currently on fire with no extinguisher in sight.
